In Pennsylvania, during fiscal year 2004, Area Agencies on Aging received 13,211 reports of need for protective services. Of these, roughly one in five (2,836) was substantiated. Of the confirmed cases, 37 percent involved self-neglect. Another 18 percent involved caregiver neglect; 16 percent involved physical abuse; 15 percent involved exploitation; 7 percent involved emotional abuse; and 2 percent involved sexual abuse. Nearly a third of the reports received in 2003-04 involved residents of long term care facilities.
